Turkey’s president says women are not equal to men

Women’s rights activists in Turkey are pushing back against new comments from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who declared women unequal to men and said that being a mother is a woman’s primary role in society.
“You cannot bring women and men into equal positions; that is against nature because their nature is different,” Erdogan said Sunday at an international meeting focused on justice and women, Turkey’s Hurriyet Daily News reported. It’s the latest provocative statement by the outspoken Turkish leader in recent days, following up on last week’s declaration about the supposed discovery of the Americas by Muslim explorers. Erdogan also railed against feminists and said Islam defines motherhood as a woman’s primary role. “Some people can understand this, while others can’t.
